Chinese targetted by “Angolan maffia”

Chinese workers in Angola

Tens of thousands of Chinese work reconstructing Angol

The Chinese embassy in Angola has advised its nationals not to go out alone at night after a spate of violent attacks on Chinese expatriates.

The “mafia-style” gang violence could affect the countries’ relations, say Chinese business leaders in Angola.

Recently there has been a series of violent robberies and a Chinese man was murdered in the capital, Luanda.

Many more attacks have gone unreported, the head of the Chinese Business Council (CBC) says.

‘Afraid’

Last month robbers reportedly poured boiling water on three Chinese workers in Luanda.

In September businessman Xu Tonggou was murdered trying to resist a robbery.

On the same day six armed men robbed the offices of a construction company, beating workers with batons and threatening them with AK-47s.

“These are just the tip of the iceberg,” says Xu Ning of the CBC.

“Things have got worse in the last few months. Just last night someone I was due to have dinner with did not turn up because he had been robbed.

“Chinese people here are afraid, they are afraid. They don’t know who’s a criminal.”

‘Bad for business’

What used to be something that happened perhaps once a month has become a daily occurrence.

“This is bad for business between Angola and China,” he said.

Eddie Zhang, head of Shanghai Urban Construction Group, the company building the new 50,000-capacity football stadium in Luanda, told the BBC that he was hearing of a growing number of attacks and that they weren’t just normal robberies but planned “mafia-style”.

Superintendent Jorge Bengue of Luanda’s Police Command police however disputed there was a campaign of violence specifically targeting Chinese nationals in the city.

He said crime was a reality in any city in the world and he was not aware of any rise in incidents involving Chinese people.

There are tens of thousands of Chinese workers in Angola, involved in reconstruction projects after the country’s 27-year-long civil war.

Chinese workers are also building stadiums for the 2010 African Cup of Nations.

China has given Angola more than $5bn in oil-backed loans to build infrastructure.

Huge audience watched operation to separate twins

More than 100,000 watched online as surgeons carried out a five hour operation to separate conjoined twin girls.

Ling Ling and Ling Mai before the operastion /Europics

Orphaned sisters Ling Ling and Ling Mai – born sharing a liver, stomach and sternum – are now recovering after what medics in Shanghai, eastern China, say was a completely successful op.

At one point so many people were watching the procedure online that it threatened to crash the entire internet network in the region.

Lead surgeon Professor Xu Weiyu said: “It was a lot more complicated than we expected. The slightest error could have caused a massive haemorrhage.”

Medics managed to separate the 11-month-old girls’ shared liver and untangle intestines that were separate, but wrapped around each other.

The separated breast bone will be covered with skin grafts in a later op, said Professor Weiyu.

“They will be able to lead completely independent lives,” he added.

2 Chinese tourists robbed by ‘Ativan Gang’, in Philippines

Two Chinese tourists, who decided to stop over at Rizal Park before their flight back to Macau, were victimized Sunday afternoon by suspected members of the so-called Ativan Gang in Manila,  Philippines.

Chinese women Qijie Wen and Huang Qin, both 29, of Shanghai, China, lost P77,000—most of the amount charged to a credit card—and a notebook containing personal information, were reportedly stolen by a Chinese-looking couple whom they mistakenly trusted.

PO2 Reginald Delos Reyes of the Manila Police District General Assignment Section (MPD-GAS) said that the Chinese tourists arrived in the country on Sept. 27 from Macau and went to Busuanga Island in Palawan.

Delos Reyes revealed that the women, on Sunday, decided to drop by Rizal Park in Ermita, Manila to see the monument before they take the night flight back home.

The Chinese tourists met the couple at around 2:35 p.m. somewhere inside the park, where their acquaintances served as their guides and even brought them to a church.

The case investigator said that after a brief tour, the Chinese-looking couple invited the women to have snacks. It was after consuming the food and drinks that the tourists started to feel dizzy.

“All they (tourists) remembered was that the suspects flagged down a taxi and (sent them) on their way to the airport for their flight back to Macau, but they were late for the flight,” Delos Reyes pointed out.

It was when the dizziness subsided that Qijie received a text message from the China Merchant Bank informing her that she had accumulated a credit on her card of P76,000. She claimed she knew nothing about the expense and told the case investigator that the couple could have taken her credit card while she was dizzy.

The thieves took P1,000 cash and a notebook containing personal information from Huang.

MPD-GAS operatives are conducting follow-up operations for the arrest of the criminals and the possible recovery of the stolen items.

Traditional mooncakes still in high demand in Shanghai

Chinese all over the world will be celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival on Saturday.

In China (中国), it is a tradition to give out mooncakes (simp月饼trad月餅) to relatives and friends during this period. The traditional type of mooncakes in Shanghai (上海) is of the savoury, rather than sweet, variety.
[Traditional mooncakes from China's Zhen Lao Da Fang Food Company.]
Yao Song Ming, deputy manager of Zhen Lao Da Fang Food Company, said: “This version of meat-stuffed mooncake is more than 100 years old. It sells well because we keep the original flavour just like it was a century ago.

“Most people like it because it is salty. Over 80 per cent of the mooncakes in the market are sweet, but older folks prefer salty ones.”  One of the company’s customers commented: “It’s an old brand and it’s very famous. Guangzhou mooncakes are too sweet. I prefer salty mooncakes.”

Each mooncake costs less than 50 US cents, and as the festival approaches, around 50,000 pieces are snapped up every day. Besides retaining the traditional taste of mooncakes, new flavours are also introduced every year at various bakeries across the city.
[Sweet mooncakes from Shanghai's PAUL.]
Mathia Beerens, F&B manager at PAUL, said: “We decided to create different flavours for the expatriates in China and for the Chinese people. We have six flavours. The flavours for the Chinese people are lemon, kitsch, raisins and cinnamon, and the flavours for the expatriate people are rum and chocolate.”

These new varieties of mooncakes are more costly, with each box priced at about US$23. According to Shanghai’s Confectionery Association, over 80 per cent of the mooncakes sold in the city are priced around US$30 (200 yuan) a box. Last year, the most expensive mooncakes were sold at US$132 a box. This year, the price tag is US$100, signalling that consumers are getting more rational and thrifty.

Shanghai cleans up for the World Expo 2010

The Chinese city Shanghai has to have a the appeal of a metropolitan city, as the authorities have decided. Bulldozing is the way to clean everything up that refers back to the traditional China.

In the Wujiangstreet in the city centre, the old ‘eatery street’ where the smells of grilled inkfish, pork and dumplings linger around. Each night a large team of street cleaners rush through the streets to clean up the litter. According to the authorities this doesn’t fit in the image of Shanghai being the host for next year’s World Expo. And therefore the famous ‘eatery street’ will be shut down. The western part has been demolished last year. Now it is a high end shopping area with Starbucks, Burger King, Nike store and a store of the British brand store Marks & Spencer.
